Mayfield Wins Burlsworth Trophy For Second-Straight Year

SPRINGDALE, Arkansas -

Oklahoma quarterback, Baker Mayfield, was named the winner of the Burlsworth Trophy on Monday for the second-straight season and becomes the first two-time winner of the award. The Burlsworth Trophy is an annual award given to the most outstanding player in America who began his career as a walk-on.

"With what the award is all about and everything that comes with it, it's very special to me," Mayfield said via a school press release. "Just being back here was enough for me, but it's very humbling and an honor to bring the award back home again. I'll cherish this and enjoy it."

Mayfield threw for 3,669 yards this season to go with 38 touchdowns through the air and six more on the ground. Along with his athletic ability, Mayfield's leadership was key in the Sooners' run to their second-consecutive Big 12 Championship after the team struggled out of the gates to the tune of a 1-2 record before winning nine straight to close the regular season.

The award was named after Brandon Burlsworth, who walked on at Arkansas in 1994 before becoming a three-year starter and earning All-American honors in 1998. Burlsworth was then drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later.

Mayfield won the award last season after leading the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship and a trip to the College Football Playoff. He is also a finalist for the Maxwell Award (collegiate player of the year) and the Davey O'Brien Award (quarterback of the year).
