NORMAN, Oklahoma -

Christmas Expressions has been in business at 24th and Lindsey in Norman since 1979. Owner Kathy Cox takes pride in the unique gifts, clothing, and handcrafted holiday cheer sold at her store.

“There’s just something for everybody,” she said.

But now the destination is dealing with a slow-down in business because of the work to widen Lindsey Street.

“We do still have access to our store, it’s just a little challenging to get here,” she explained.

Cox is looking forward to the finished product in front of her store. But in the meantime, she's hoping for a big turnout on Small Business Saturday and during the months until construction is complete.

“It’s real important for people if they want those unique, local shops, to support them,” Cox told News 9.

Along with other efforts, several groups are coming together to call on local artists to help keep the Lindsey Street businesses afloat during road construction. The Norman Arts Council, Norman Public Arts Board, Institute for Quality Communities, Norman Chamber of Commerce, Norman Economic Development Coalition and Visit Norman partnered to provide 17-20 grants worth $1,000 to artists with proposals for projects on Lindsey Street.

Erinn Gavaghan with the Norman Arts Council said artists from any discipline can attend a free workshop at Sooner Legends, December 4 at 11 a.m. The workshop is mandatory for anyone planning to apply for a grant.

Gavaghan said it will be up to the artists to come up with ideas for projects in the area. The hope is that the performances, displays or community art events will remind people that the places on Lindsey Street need their patronage.

“There will be something fun and exciting happening when you go to visit them,” Gavaghan told News 9.
