Firefighters Give More Than 500 Coats To Hayes Elementary Students

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma has been seeing some uncommonly warm temperatures this fall season but temperatures can become bitterly cold at a moment's notice.

For more than 530 children at Hayes Elementary, they will not have worry about staying warm while going to and from school when the temperatures do drop to near or below freezing.

Wednesday morning, Oklahoma City firefighters personally fitted Hayes Elementary students with winter coats.

According to the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools, 90 percent of families in the district live at or below the poverty line.

Firefighters have given out winter coats to children for 26 years. Since 1990, more than $115,000 has been raised to help provide 1,300 pairs of shoes and more than 3,400 coats to children in Oklahoma City Fire Department's coverage area.
