NextGen: Precision Forecasting
OKLAHOMA CITY - News 9 can take you into storms like we've never done before. We unveiled our NextGen Live radar on Tuesday. Chief Meteorologist David Payne traveled to Huntsville, Alabama to show us why this radar is so precise.
"The concept all the way along has been save lives, detect, disseminate, response," said Bob Baron, Baron Services.
It's that concept that has led Bob Baron and his engineers to build the most advanced dual pol radar in the world.
"We can tell whether those storms are going to increase or they're going to decrease based on what they're moving into," said Baron. "Well that's a marriage of real time information and forecasting information."
News 9 installed the NextGen live with one million watts of power. Combined with dual pol technology, the radar is the most powerful and fastest dual pol radar in Oklahoma. It can dissect a storm from the size of the raindrops and hail, to pinpointing tornadoes even to the smallest circulations.
"I can give you all of the information about where the storm is, what the danger is where the fastest winds may be, where's that dangerous rotation and then clearly be able to display it," said Steve Bray, Baron Meteorologist.
