Only On 9: Wellston Officer Shot By Michael Vance Shares Story

Posted: Updated:
WELLSTON, Oklahoma -

Michael Vance terrorized the state before troopers killed him in a gun battle. But the day he became a fugitive, is the day a police officer's life changed. Vance shot him, and for the first time, he opens up about that night.

“We were out there for just a minute and then it went south.”

Wellston Police Officer Shawn Stewart found himself with a barrage of bullets coming right at him.

Stewart had just responded to a call to check out some guys shooting off their guns and while looking at their ID's, one of them, Michael Vance, opened fire.

Vance shot Stewart three times and a fellow officer once in the foot. And as Vance fled, Stewart said he instinctively went into survival mode.

“The biggest thing is going home. I have kids to support… They look up to me and I’m going to get home,” said Stewart.

Stewart has a wife, four kids, works two jobs 4 - as a police officer and a plumber, and he has a home he's renovating on his own.

So even though he was alive, how would he possibly be able to support his family as he heals? Well, that’s where Oklahomans come in.

“I came over to visit after the shooting, his wife game me the tour and I noticed a few things left undone,” said Stewart’s friend, Jason Shaffer.

His buddy said he put out the plea and started getting money and items donated to fix up his house.

“I don’t know how I’ll repay them. I probably will never be able to repay everybody. But I’ll be their officer,” said Stewart.

He may have to go have surgery to remove the bullet, but hopes after two months he’ll be back out serving his community.

Jason Shaffer has been gathering supplies and volunteers to help finish renovating Shawn’s home. If you’d like to help, you can contact Jason through his business Facebook page.  Jason said they’re still needing a double vanity for a master bedroom, a head-knocker cabinet (above the toilet), a towel cabinet, nickel faucets, shower heads, sod and landscape materials.
