On Sunday afternoon, an investigation with barely any updates over the week turned into an active chase for fugitive Michael Vance.

Donnie Williamson and his friends were on his property chopping wood around 3:00 p.m. Sunday when they saw something strange across the Washita River. This was on the other side of his property. He said, "There was an automobile covered with these weeds."

Williamson said he almost drove over to tell the driver that he was trespassing, but his friend stopped him after remembering that authorities were looking for a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse. It was Vance's last known getaway car.

"If we hadn't known that, we'd have been dead," said Williamson.

They took a photo from afar, called 911 and backed off. He says Michael Vance must have spotted him. The small silver car quickly sped off.

Authorities say Michael Vance took off to Leedey where he stole a flatbed truck. The owners of that truck were not injured.

He was driving when Dewey County Sheriff Clay Sander pulled the truck over, not knowing it was Vance in the vehicle. Vance shot the sheriff, hitting him in the arm. The sheriff is expected to be okay.

The fugitive, once again, took off.

Soon after, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol helicopter spotted Vance. He was in Custer County north of Butler when it became a shootout between him and four OHP troopers.

One neighbor witnessed the events from his front porch. Mickey Baker said he had his ear on the police scanners and knew they were chasing Vance right up his street.

Vance stopped viewing distance from Baker's home and started shooting at the law enforcement officers.

"It sounded like a war going on," said Baker.

Baker thinks, "He didn't have a chance. The officers took a big risk last night. He was sure laying it on them and they shot for almost a minute or so."

Every trooper fired their weapon, ultimately killing Michael Vance. None of the four were injured. The 8 day manhunt for Michael Vance is over.
