Regular season for the Oklahoma City Thunder starts on the road next Wednesday against the Philadelphia 76ers.

With the new season, comes changes.

Former OKC mainstay Kevin Durant is with Golden State and Russell Westbrook is notably the new face of the Thunder.

And the drama continues.

On Wednesday, Durant’s Rolling Stone Cover came out, titled Kevin Durant: Why the NBA Superstar Had to Blow Up His Life to Get His Shot.

Most everyone in the sports world is well versed on that story, but in case not, here are a few details.

In the article, Durant went so far as to presume he and Westbrook weren’t much more than work associates.

"We had our own cliques that we hung with on the road,” said Durant. “Russell had his guys, I had mine. It was never a bad thing. Just how it was."

Durant went on to say the phone call was one of the hardest calls he’d ever made.

"It was rough, talking to Sam Presti and Clay Bennett,” he told Rolling Stone. “I cried and got emotional, I'll put it like that.”

Back to Westbrook; he also graced a cover today, headlining Sports Illustrated.

Westbrook told Sports Illustrated that despite previous talk, he never planned to leave the Thunder.

Why?

“You remember the people you’ve been in the trenches with,” he said.

On Durant's exit, Westbrook stated, “This is professional sports; You have to live with it. I just continued about my day.”

Center Steve Adams added, “I don’t know if Russ was hurt because he’d never tell me, and he’d definitely never tell you.”

An excerpt from the magazine revealed how former Thunder center Kendrick Perkins used to call his teammates “cupcakes” if he thought they were being soft. Some of the players, including Durant and Westbrook, started using the term.

On July 4, after Durant’s decision to leave OKC was made public, Westbrook took to Instagram and posted a picture featuring three rows of July 4 themed cupcakes.

Coincidence or subtle jab?

Regardless, the November 3 matchup between the former Thunder duo should be an interesting game to witness.
