A Comanche County jury has convicted a Lawton man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a man at a motel during an attempted robbery.

The jury on Friday found 30-year-old Robert Long guilty of the March 2014 shooting death of 59-year-old Johnny Allen of Fort Towson and sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The jury also convicted Long of attempted robbery with a dangerous after initially finding him not guilty on that charge. District Judge Gerald Neuwirth, however, said a conviction on the attempted robbery charge is necessary for the murder conviction and sent jurors back into deliberations.

The jury returned guilty verdicts on both charges about an hour later.

Prosecutors say Allen was staying at the motel while working on a road construction project.
