OKLAHOMA CITY -

As the holiday approaches, the Oklahoma City Fire Department is reminding people to be cautious of flammable items.

“Moving into the colder months, we typically see a spike on our residential structure fires,” said Battalion Chief Benny Fulkerson.

Fulkerson uses Wednesday night’s fire on Northwest 18th Terrace as an example.

“Candles placed in close proximity to decorations for the holidays was the cause of the fire,” he said.

That was the first thing that went wrong. Fulkerson said candles need to be at least 12 inches away from anything flammable.

The second problem was that the home did not have working smoke alarms. He said there was a smoke alarm with no batteries inside.

Fulkerson is reminding all residents that they need to have working smoke alarms.

Luckily, the two people inside the house were able to escape the fire. They were treated for smoke inhalation. Had this fire occurred while the residents were sleeping, Fulkerson fears it would have had a more tragic ending.

Most fires that the Oklahoma City Fire Department responds to are as a result of human behavior. Fulkerson said most fires are preventable with some extra caution.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department installs smoke alarms for free for all residents in the city. To get more information, call your local fire station.
