If the Ohio State players weren’t excited enough for last weekend’s blue blood matchup against Oklahoma, OU’s backup quarterback, Austin Kendall, made sure to give the Buckeyes a little extra juice for the game when he took some shots at the Ohio State defense.

"I think they really have a very basic defense," Kendall told Sooner Sports TV. "I think we can go out there...I mean Baker Mayfield, he'll light them up. I'm really looking forward to it. If my number is called, I think I can do the same. I'm really looking forward to the game. It's going to be really exciting."

It was a bold statement by a young player, but clearly Kendall was a bit off in his assessment. Ohio State held the Sooners’ offense to only 24 points on the night while intercepting Baker Mayfield twice. Not to mention, Ohio State won the game convincingly by three touchdowns.

Only to rub salt in the wound, there were some Buckeyes’ players who celebrated on the field after the game while carrying a sign referring to Kendall’s comments.

With a couple days to digest what his true freshman quarterback said, OU head coach Bob Stoops made it clear he wasn’t happy with Kendall.

“Ridiculous comments. That will be addressed as well,” Stoops said. “I don’t know what he could’ve been watching to be quite honest with you, he must not have watched any tape if he had that to say. There’s no place for it. And sadly for you guys, because of that there will be a whole bunch of guys not available anymore because we can’t trust them and that’s just how it’ll be.”

Stoops was rightfully upset about what Kendall said, but he appeared more surprised than anything.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Stoops said. “We talk all the time about there should never be anything but a positive comment about anyone you’re going to compete against. There’s no place for it.”

Ultimately it’s something Kendall will learn from, but it’s never a good look for a backup to give the opposing team bulletin board material.
