Logan Co. Deputies, Officers Receive Triage Training

Deputies and officers in Logan County received hands-on training with a new tool they'll be able to use in the field to save lives.

Logan County law enforcement will be equipment with triage kits.

Law enforcement is often the first on scene of an emergency. Now with these kits, they'll be able to start administering medical care to those in need using the tourniquets and bandages inside. These items have become just as crucial as their weapons in their line of work.

Every second counts when trying to stop someone from bleeding in an emergency. Seconds can be the matter of life and death at times. A time when first responders have no time to think, only react.

In the training, Logan County deputies and officers were also taught the basics of tactical medicine.

“There's numerous events that have happened in the first several months, the Dallas shootings, the Baton Rouge shootings - where this is the exact type of training that the officers need,” said Dr. Bill Worden, Guthrie Medical Director.

Through a grant from Homeland Security, Logan County law enforcement will have triage kits including a tourniquet, bandages, and Quikclot sponges.

“You can get hurt, shot, stabbed, anything of that nature. And this will come in handy,” said Deputy Curtis Stewart, Logan County Sheriff’s Office.

For the past 15 years, Deputy Curtis Steward has patrolled in Logan County. A kit like this, he says, will be used almost daily.

“One of the most important things that we are trying to teach them is how to treat themselves first so that they don't become a causality, so that they can help other people,” said Dr. Worden.

Continuing to save lives, one day the life they save may be their own.
