The Oklahoma City Fire Department confirms a three-alarm fire at the London Square Apartments killed a 4-year-old boy. Neighbors say the boy's mother ran back into the burning building to save son but didn't make it.

At last check the woman is still in the hospital in critical condition. On Tuesday morning without hesitation neighbors jumped in to put out the fire in hopes of saving the mother and son.

Caller: There's a lot of kids in the apartment. We trying to get them all out now.

Dispatch: OK in apartment 158? Or you talking about…

Caller: Yes! There's some lady in there. [Screams in back ground.]

Thick smoke and flames filled the London Square Apartments, early Tuesday morning. Smoke poured into Antonio Lucas's apartment through air vents. He ran outside to find his next door neighbor's apartment on fire.

“She came out a put a couple of kids out. And one of the infants was still inside. And she went back in there to get him. And she hadn't come back out. So we kicked the front door open and noticed the whole kitchen basically was on fire,” said Antonio lucas.

Dispatch: Ma'am? I need you to talk to me. Are there people in the apartment 158?

Caller: They... There's a whole dozen in the apartment. They're kids getting out. They're kids getting out.

Lucas and other neighbors looked for anything they could fill with water to throw on the flames. But the smoke and fire overpowered the volunteer firefighters, forcing them out of the apartment, the mother and 4-year-old boy were still inside.

Dispatch: Ma'am!

Caller: She has not came out. She has not came out. There's still one person in there.

Dispatch: OK. OK. We have a lot of help on the way. OK?

When fire crews arrived they found the woman on the apartment's bedroom floor and rescued her out of a window. First responders immediately began CPR. Shortly after firefighters found the young boy, who later died.

News 9 has learned there were smoke detectors inside the apartment, but it's unclear if they were working. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
