Metro Group Surprises People With Acts Of Kindness

A group in Oklahoma City started a movement by surprising people with an act of kindness. They're paying for random shoppers' groceries.

Matthew Danuser and Disty Simpson both have busy day jobs, but one of their biggest passions has become helping people. They were recently inspired by a viral video and made it their own mission here in the metro and beyond.

“It just it amazed me. I immediately knew I wanted to do it,” said Danuser.

Using their own money and eventually donations, they set up a camera inside a grocery store and started giving. They lingered around the checkout line and waited for the total to be called, and then swooped in with cash to cover it. It didn’t matter if the person bought one item or had a cart full of items.

“It was just an unbelievable experience to see the joy on people’s face when we paid their bill,” he added.

Then came the hugs, the handshakes and headshakes in disbelief. One woman, who tried to pay when it was already taken care of, dropped her jaw when she figured out what's happened.

Each gesture saved anywhere from $2 and $200 per shopper. But it meant more than the boost to their budget -- it was a little faith put back in humanity.

“We can let people know there’s good here. There is good in this world,” said Simpson.

In the last three weeks, they've raised hundreds of dollars for their cause and helped roughly 40 families and counting. Now the group of guys who just wanted to do good is on their way to creating a new non-profit, spreading the message of love one grocery bill at a time.

The next round of purchases at checkout is September 18 – the location will be a surprise.
