In the past two months, both the Cordell Police Chief and a city council woman have stepped down. Now, more than 250 people are calling for the resignation of the mayor.

The mayor says he respectfully rejects calls for his resignation, calling the claims against him meaningless.

“If they want to get rid of me as mayor, then basically you go to the District Attorney or the Attorney General and file charges of wrongdoing,” said Mayor Bob Plummer.

The people behind the petition say they have several reasons why they don’t feel Plummer is the right guy for the job.

Petition organizer, Carl Ramsey said, “He made promises that he didn’t keep, he said he was going to get rid of the good ole by politics and the buddy system. He didn’t.”

Carl Ramsey said some of his frustration is centered around the mismanagement of the police department.

Plummer said he had to make more than $100,000 in cuts to police and dispatch.

Ramsey said the cuts cost jobs and increased crime rates. “We had five police officers and one dispatch resign because of the budget cuts.”

Plummer added he understands the office of mayor is a difficult position, but not one he'll be bullied out of.

“Maybe they were hoping, ‘Oh Gee! Nobody likes me maybe I’ll just duck out’. No, I came in here to do a job that needed to be done,” said Plummer.

Ramsey said he would like to get the vote of no confidence on next week's meeting agenda. That meeting is on Tuesday, September 6.
