Architects are exploring options of better connecting the area of OU Health Sciences with Automobile Alley and other areas near Bricktown.
I-235 is the big divider, but there are plans to go over it.
Artist renderings of what's called the "OKC Innovation Link" shows how each side of I-235 will be connected at several spots from NE 10th Street up to 13th Street.
“It will make the highway go away,” said Architect Dennis Wells with Miles Associates, which called the deck a “pet project” for the company.
Wells said the plans allow for bike and walking paths, and green space over the concrete below.
Similar designs have gone up all over the country.
Dallas Klyde Warren Park is over a highway and Columbus has a similar development.
“We don’t want it be a destination as much as a connector, as a passage,” said Wells, who said walking from the OU Health Sciences area the other side of I-235 is dangerous because of its low guardrails and limited sidewalks.
The cost of the project is unclear, but Miles Associates thinks all phases could cost $200 million.
Right now, there is not a plan to approve or pay for the project, but city leaders are interested in exploring options. That includes the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber.
Miles Associates plans to hold a forum next month to talk more about this project and how to pay for the I-235 deck.
