OSU Boathouse Sign To Be Taken Down

In big orange letters, OSU is marked on the east side of the newest boathouse down by the Boathouse District in Oklahoma City. For all the Cowboy fans, that sign will be taken down and replaced with ones approved by the city.

“A lot of people don’t realize that even signs need a certificate of approval,” said Lisa Chronister, Urban Design Program Planner for Oklahoma City.

“I’m told what was installed is about 10 feet by 10 feet, which is 100 square feet. What is allowed is 34.5 square feet, so significantly less is allowed than what was installed.”

Chronister says that particular sign was not submitted for approval to the city. The Boathouse Foundation has been asked to take it down.

Spokesperson for the Boathouse Foundation, Elizabeth Laurent said the large signage was put up temporarily for the official announcement event that happened on August 20. A permanent design will be developed according to city guidelines.

Laurent said while the sign is gaining attention ahead of college football season, she hopes people will recognize the value behind it.

The Oklahoma State University Kayak Boathouse represents OSU’s new swift water rescue training program that gives first responder free hands-on experience in rushing water.

Chronister seems to agree it’s not about the battle between local universities, as many of them are represented by different boathouses along the Oklahoma River. She thinks it was an oversight that will soon be fixed.
