OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) is working to address some of the challenges schools are facing on the Northeast side. They want to create a task force of students, parents school officials and community members.

So far, they've received 165 applications for the task force. Because of this response, they may have to increase the 20 seats to 25.

Superintendent Aurora Lora said right now achievement is not where she'd like it to be for schools in that area. “We’ve also heard from families and teachers and principals that more support is needed,” she explained.

In recent months, KIPP Charter has pushed for the approval for expansion in the Northeast portion of the district. And hundreds turned out for those, at times, heated talks. They also crowded school board meetings with strong opinions on both sides of the issue.

But the one thing that united them, Lora said, was the fact that the Northeast side needs better school options.

“We need to capitalize on the investment and the interest that people have right now to come up with solutions for Northeast Oklahoma City,” she said.

Once the seats representing the schools in that part of Oklahoma City are selected, Lora said they'll study best practices for similar districts across the country, decide which buildings facing budget trouble could be consolidated, and which sites will house future charter schools.

But most importantly, they’ll make their voices heard for the students in need.

The deadline to apply is August 26.

The group will be formed by the end of the month and the first meeting will be in September.
