EDMOND, Oklahoma -

Thirty years ago Saturday, 14 people were gunned down at the Edmond Post office on Broadway before the gunman took his own life. This weekend people will gather to remember those killed at the memorial fountain outside the Post Office where the victims lost their lives.

The service will start at 8 a.m. Saturday.

“I think it needs some repair on the outside. It’s crumbling,” said former Edmond postal worker Herb Rattke, about the condition of the fountain that contains the names of the victims.

Rattke was stationed at the Edmond Post Office in August 1986 and lost 14 co-workers he considered friends. He told News 9 he comes to the memorial to remember the victims, with the hope that the water is on at the fountain.

“If it’s going I feel great. If it’s not I feel low,” said Rattke, who has been helping to organize the Saturday’s memorial service.

Rettke fears the memorial could slip through the cracks, because no group has taken charge of caring for the fountain. The fountain shows cracks and hasn’t had water until four weeks ago.

The Post Office says it tries to maintain the memorial because it’s on its property, but repairs usually take a long time to get approved.

Right Now, the Postmaster says the fountain has a leak that needs to be repaired.

The city of Edmond claims the bronze statue on top was polished by a volunteer for free because the post office couldn't pay for it.
