LOGAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

The Logan County Sheriff's Office is preparing to help as many people as possible in case of emergency, by encouraging citizens to register their storm shelters in a new way.

Shelter Finder is the new menu option in the Logan County Sheriff's Office mobile app. Citizens can simply input a name and address and hit submit. The process takes less than a minute, but could save lives.

Detective Greg Valencia says they want to make it as easy as possible to register storm shelters. That way first responders know exactly where to find citizens in the aftermath of a tornado or disastrous storm.

“We will immediately begin to check those lists of locations and send people there to check on the homeowners,” Valencia said.

Many people in Logan County tell News 9 they already registered their shelters, safe rooms and basements through their local fire department, but recently the sheriff's office decided to compile all those lists into one database.

Valencia points out that the local departments are not always the first to respond. Now the sheriff’s office can easily dispatch any available first responders quickly and efficiently.

Homes not registered in the database will get help eventually, but in the wake of devastation, every second counts.

“It’s very important to be able to check on these people because they could become injured before they actually made it into the shelter. Their shelter could be covered in such a fashion that they can’t get out of the shelter,” Valencia said.

If your shelter is already registered with a fire department, you do not have to submit your information again. If you do not have a smart phone, you can still register by clicking here.
