Oklahoma State defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements is tasked with replacing two All-Big 12 defensive ends. The Cowboys totaled 40 sacks last year, their most since 1998, and while they return a wealth of experience on the inside at defensive tackle, defensive end is a hotly contested position going into 2016.

At Clements’ disposal are four redshirt sophomores and a junior college transfer.

“Five guys stand out,” Clements said on Tuesday. “Trey Carter and Jarell Owens, Jordan Brailford, Cole Walterscheid and Tralund Webber so it’s got to sort itself out. There’s guys to choose from but we’re going to need some guys to step up to help us win on Saturday.”

Carter, Owens, Brailford and Walterscheid were part of the huge 2014 recruiting class but they don’t have a single start between them. Webber was one of the top-Juco defensive ends at Blinn College last year, but the junior still has to get used to a higher level of competition.

Webber is the lone defensive end scholarship in this year’s class and the Cowboys only defensive end from the 2015 class, Louis Brown, left the program. Clements and defensive coordinator Glen Spencer have a pair of 2017 verbal commits from Oologah’s Brock Martin and Keller, Texas’ Spencer Misko.

The Pokes will likely go with a committee this year, but watch this position battle and see who ends up the starters. The pass rush for the next two-to-three years will hinge on the class of 2014 plus Tralund Webber.
