Sky Sox Trounce Dodgers, Cut OKC's Division Lead To Nine

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado -

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored nine runs for the second straight game and piled up eight extra-base hits, leading to a 9-4 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers Monday night at Security Service Field.

Four different Sky Sox collected two extra-base hits. Garrett Cooper homered and doubled, driving in the first three runs for Colorado Springs. Michael Reed went 3-for-3 and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Yadiel Rivera led all players with four RBI.

The Sky Sox (52-54) did the bulk of the damage against the Dodgers bullpen, putting up seven runs and seven hits over the final three innings. Over the past two games, the Dodgers relief corps has surrendered 11 runs and 13 hits over 6.1 innings of work.

Colorado Springs broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Rob Rogers, who was making his Triple-A debut. The inning got off to an ominous start, when third baseman Austin Barnes committed a throwing error, allowing Nate Orf to reach second base. Cooper followed with a RBI double to right-center field, putting the Sky Sox ahead, 3-2.

The Sky Sox collected two more extra-base hits in the inning. Reed delivered a RBI triple, and Rivera followed with a RBI double to make it 5-2.

The Dodgers got one run back in the seventh inning. With the bases empty and two out, Micah Johnson doubled off the wall in left field. Charlie Culberson then brought Johnson home with a RBI single to trim the deficit to two runs.

OKC edged closer in the eighth inning. Rob Segedin led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Walters. With the tying run at second base and two out, Sky Sox reliever Michael Kirkman struck out Jack Murphy to keep Colorado Springs ahead.

The Sky Sox delivered a four-run knockout blow in the bottom of the eighth inning. Each of the first five batters reached base. With the bases loaded and none out, Rivera tripled to center field. Rene Garcia then hit a RBI single to make it 9-4.

The Dodgers never led the entire game. The Sky Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases empty and two outs, Orf worked an 11-pitch plate appearance, resulting in a walk. On the first pitch to the next batter, Cooper hit a two-run homer to left field.

The Dodgers evened the score in the fourth inning, as they hit back-to-back home runs for the second consecutive game. Segedin went opposite way to right field for his team-leading 21st homer this season. O’Koyea Dickson followed Segedin by drilling a home run off the batter’s eye in center field.

Segedin, Johnson, and Culberson led OKC with two hits apiece. Dickson walked twice in addition to his home run, reaching base three times. The Dodgers finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Colorado Springs starting pitcher Aaron Wilkerson picked up his first win in a Sky Sox uniform. He allowed two runs and four hits over six innings. Wilkerson (1-3) tied his season high with three walks, but also struck out eight.

Making a spot start, Sam LeCure gave the Dodgers five solid innings. He allowed two runs and five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts in his first start since May 30.

Rogers (0-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned) and three hits over two innings.

With the loss, the Dodgers’ first-place lead was cut to nine games ahead of the Sky Sox. They’ve lost consecutive road games against an American Conference opponent for the first time since April 13-14 in Memphis.

The Dodgers finish their series in Colorado Springs, looking a split in the four-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Central time.
