Bob Stoops Talks With Dean Blevins At the Sooner Golf Outing on Thursday
Bob Stoops and I were talking about the quality, size and depth of his running backs. He then reminded me OU beat Alabama on landing Samaje Perine, so while his being on track to become OU’s career rushing leader after three seasons may surprise some people who’d put all the focus on 5-star RB Joe Mixon when the two enrolled in Norman in the same recruiting class, nothing the human tank does surprises the coaches.
Stoops said that he dropped in to get a workout yesterday and noticed Perine doing pull-ups. Reps of eight. With a 45-pound weight hanging down that was chained around his waist. So that means the sets of eight reps Popeye Perine was doing with relative ease was actually a total of 280 pounds. Like LeeRoy Selmon, with whom I played, Tommie Harris who wowed from Day 1, Perine is in that category of ‘freakish’ athletic specimens. There are Joe Don Looney stories from the Sixties and others who’ve donned the Crimson and Cream who just make you shake your head. But the Phluggerville Phlash is on campus now adding stories to his legendary career. And it’s only July.
Here’s an interview I did with Stoops today as we played in his annual Sooner Golf Outing at Toby Keith’s outstanding golf course, Belmar Golf Club. Perine was part of our chat. Thanks for checking in and we’ll be pumping out stuff regularly beginning very soon. The Sooners hit the practice field one week from today.
