A McClain County Deputy is on leave after shooting and injuring a man, Monday morning near Dibble. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is investigating to see if it was justified.

Crime scene tape wrapped around the house on 21380 MacArthur Ave. for several hours after the incident.

Special Agent Steve Tanner with OSBI says McClain County deputies were responding to a shots fired call. The reporting party told officers a man down the street was making verbal threats and that the shots could have come from him. That’s when police knocked on the door, where 41-year-old Todd Sparks answered.

“From what we understand, he came to the door with a firearm in his hand and pointed it toward the officers,” said Tanner.

That’s when one of the deputies shot Sparks. OSBI quickly took over the investigation.

Sparks is at the hospital undergoing surgery. OSBI confirms his injuries are expected to be non-life threatening. News 9 spoke to Sparks’ wife off camera. She said her husband did not know it was police knocking. They were having issues with neighbors, so he went to the door with a gun drawn thinking it was trouble.

“We do know that there was some conflicts going on between Mr. Sparks and his family and friends with another group of people,” said Tanner.

Tanner said they are ironing out all the details from the days before that led up to the deputies being called out to the scene on Monday morning.

Following the full investigation, the report will be given to the District Attorney’s office, who will then determine whether there are criminal acts involved. The investigation is expected to be finalized six to eight weeks.
