OKC Officer Shares How Life Has Changed Since Dallas, Baton Rouge

Out of uniform and away from police department top brass, an OKC police officer revealed how life has changed since officer deaths in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

“For the first time in seven years after Dallas when I left for work, my wife started crying. She’s never done that before,” said Sgt. Rob Gallavan.

The officer parks his patrol car at his house and says he didn’t give it much thought until recently with two kids at home.

“I pulled them aside and said, if something happens this is how you barricade yourself, and this is where you take the phone and my 15-year-old daughter knows how to use my city issued handgun,” said Gallavan.

The sergeant, who works overnights, tells News 9 not one part of his job feels routine right now.

“Traffic stops that you would normally engage in, you kind of think, ‘Do I need someone else out here with me?’” he said.

Gallavan says he’s now cautious of everyone, including people who have approached him to show their support for police officers.

“You are very defensive,” said Gallavan, who says he’s recently made his will now, in case he’s killed in the line of duty.
