There’s a lot of hype around the OU football team heading into the 2016 season, so it’s no surprise the Sooners’ best players are getting a lot of recognition with the first game against Houston only six weeks away.

Both quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Semaje Perine were named to the Walter Camp Trophy watch list on Friday, which is an award that goes to the most outstanding player of the year who has exemplified the qualities of self-discipline, unselfish team play, desire to excel, mature judgment and respect for leadership.

Mayfield was a First Team Walter Camp All-American in 2015, and is also on watch lists for both the Davey O’Brien Award and Maxwell Award. Mayfield threw for 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns last season while finishing fourth in Heisman voting and was named the Big 12 preseason Offensive Player of the Year earlier this week.

Mayfield’s backfield mate, Perine, rushed for 1,349 yards last season despite battling the growing pains of Oklahoma’s offensive line throughout the first part of the year. Perine is also on watch lists for the Doak Walker Award, the Wuerffel Trophy and the Maxwell Award.
