News 9's StreetScope Technology To Track Exact Location Of Severe Weather

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

News 9 has the most advanced warning system when it comes to severe weather and the most experienced weather team. Besides showing you the best footage, we can now display exact locations of storms and tornadoes, live on your screen.

When severe weather hits Oklahoma, News 9's Chief Meteorologist David Payne and his team hit the air to track it and keep you safe. Our storm trackers bring you footage from the field and Jim Gardner shows us some of the most harrowing views from the air. Now he can take that footage to a whole new level.

"It's going to be an incredible tool," said David Payne, News 9's Chief Meteorologist.

With our new StreetScope mapping technology, we can give you a complete road map on screen, pinpointing the exact location of breaking news and severe weather.

"Every street will be labeled, every address on every home will be labeled, ahead of the tornado, behind the tornado," said Payne.

The technology will overlay this detailed information on top of real time video.

"My cameraman Ben can zoom into the base of that tornado so now it's going to show the streets," said News 9 Pilot Jim Gardner. "And then as we pull back wide, it's going to start mapping everything out in front of it."

It can even help guide first responders in the wake of a destructive storm.

"As we're flying over that damage where there are some homes gone or damaged or whatever, we can overlay what that looked like an hour ago," Payne said. "I mean it is mind blowing what this can do."
