Stroud Woman Arrested, Accused Of Stealing Donations From Cancer Patient's Family

A Stroud woman, accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from a little girl battling cancer, has been arrested in Arkansas.

The woman didn't just have the victim’s family fooled; she apparently had the entire community believing she was a good neighbor who planned to open a cafe in Stroud. 

Turns out, authorities say, it was all a big con.

It's the first time in a long time Valerie and Roy Killman have gotten some good news. Carla Jones, the woman accused of stealing more than $40,000 in donations for the Killmans 11-year old daughter Dani, has been caught.

“Getting her off the street and not being able to take advantage of people like she has been doing is the best news that we’ve heard,” said Dani’s father, Roy Killman.

The Killmans spent seven months with Dani in Oklahoma City fighting the painful cancer that filled her bones. During that time, they say they were approached by Jones. They say Jones said she recently lost her son, Wayne, and wanted to help the Killmans to honor her son.

"She said, ‘I don’t want to see another kid suffer and another parent lose their kid like I lost Wayne’. Well, Wayne is not dead,” said Dani’s mother, Valerie Killman.

The Killmans say that was just one of a series of lies Jones used to gain their trust and gain access to their bank accounts.

“Jeez, we lost our home. We lost our personal items. Everything down to the health insurance. The list goes on and on. Personal documents,” said Valerie.  

The Killmans say losing the money hurts, but the betrayal hurts more. They want Jones to serve time for what she's accused of doing.

“I just want karma to catch up to her and say you know you made your bed. It’s time to pay for the things you’ve done,” said Roy.

The Killmans say the police still can't account for all of the missing money. They doubt they'll get much if any of it back. Right now, they're living with family until they can save up for a new home.
