Charge Filed Against Man Accused Of Impersonating Deputy In OKC

A felony count of false impersonation of a law enforcement officer was filed in Oklahoma County District Court Friday, against 48-year-old Michael Joseph Edmonds.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Edmonds showed up to a home in a Southwest Oklahoma City neighborhood and told the woman who answered he was a deputy sheriff. He also claimed Oklahoma County deputies had been watching her house and asked her if there was anything she was hiding or that he should be aware of, according to the documents. Her reply was “no.”

Court documents also said Edmonds showed what appeared to be a badge and asked if he could “look around”. So, the victim allowed him to go in and look through her living room and kitchen, but she got upset and he left.

Documents said there are no records of him working for authorities. The responding officer said Edmonds claimed to work for Oklahoma County and Cleveland County.

When News 9 went to her home on Friday, we knocked several times before she decided to answer.

“I had to check every window, see who was here because I won’t open the door no more [sic],” she said.

Understandably, she did not want to go on camera after such a scary situation.

Oklahoma City Police said anytime someone comes to your home, make sure you're 100 percent certain you know who they are, before letting them in.

“If they flash a badge, simply ask them, ‘What’s your name and what police department are you with?’ And you can be on the phone with 911 at that time, passing along that information and the operator can tell you immediately if someone should be at your home or shouldn’t be,” MSgt. Gary Knight said.

Jail records show Edmonds is out on bond. His next court date has not been set.
