The NTSB is now investigating what caused a plane crash outside a Houston airport that killed three Oklahomans. The plane left from the airport in Norman Thursday morning.

News 9 was told the husband along with his wife and brother were flying to Houston to visit their father in the hospital.

Audio from air traffic control details the moments before the crash.

Pilot: “35 clear to land. Trying to get down again. 4252 gulf.”

Air Traffic Control: “No problem.”

The website Flight Aware shows the path Dana Gray flew the Cirrus SR-20, and also on board was her husband Tony and his brother Jerry. Their plane left Norman shortly after 10 a.m., with a final destination set for the Houston Hobby airport.

Gray made two attempts to land, each time coming in too high, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. She then circled around the airport again, her third attempt to land.

Air Traffic Control: “52 gulf go ahead and make the left turn now to enter the uh downwind, midfield downwind for only 4. If you can just keep me a nice, low, tight pattern.”

Air Traffic Control: “Ma'am. Ma'am uh straighten up! Straighten up!”

“It sounded like roar. Then boom. Like the motor was cutting off,” said Alex Rios, a witness.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane suddenly nose dive, eventually crashing into a car in a parking lot north of the airport.

No one was in the car at the time, but Dana, Tony, and Jerry all died in the crash.

NTSB investigators say it's possible the Grays' plane stalled. The single engine plane was equipped with a parachute but it did not deploy.

The NTSB will work with the manufacturers of the engine and plane for its investigation.

News 9 spoke with the Gray family. They said they are all in a state of shock after learning Thursday’s devastating news. The couple leaves behind four children.
