The police investigation into Aubrey McClendon's death has ended with nothing found to lead investigators to think it was anything other than a tragic accident, a police spokesman said.

McClendon died March 2 in a fiery crash in northeast Oklahoma City. Both homicide and traffic investigators looked into every possible scenario including suicide.

“In late May of 2016, the second investigation into the Aubrey McClendon case was completed," Oklahoma City police Capt. Paco Balderrama said. "An accident and homicide investigation were both conducted by our department into Mr. McClendon’s death. Our investigators found no information or evidence which would compel us to believe this was anything other than a vehicular accident.”

The state medical examiner's office has not released its final report concerning McClendon's death.

McClendon was part owner of the Oklahoma City Thunder and was the co-founder and ex-CEO of Chesapeake Energy. He started another company after he left Chesapeake named American Energy Partners, which is in the process of shutting down. McClendon was also known for his philanthropic efforts in Oklahoma City.

McClendon was indicted on a federal anti-trust charge the day before he died.
