OU Baseball: Neuse A Unanimous Selection To All-Big 12 First Team

Oklahoma shortstop Sheldon Neuse earned unanimous All-Big 12 First Team the league announced on Tuesday morning. He becomes one of just 10 players in the 20-year history of the league to make the First Team three times and is just the second player to become a unanimous selection three times.

Entering the postseason, Neuse leads the Big 12 in slugging percentage at .672 and ranks second in hitting at .376 and fourth in on-base percentage at .464. His 10 home runs and 46 RBI are both tied for third in the league. Neuse has added 15 doubles and five triples; tied for the league lead.

On the mound, Neuse, who joined former TCU pitcher Preston Morrison as the only three-time unanimous picks, owns a 4-1 record with five saves. He sports a 1.40 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 19.1 innings with opponents hitting just .148 off of him. Neuse has also been named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser, Golden Spikes and John Olerud Award.

Five Sooners were named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, including right-handed pitcher Chris Andritsos and outfielder Steele Walker on the All-Freshman Team. Andritsos is 4-5 on the mound with a 4.28 ERA and ranks second in the league with a 1.77 walks-per-nine-innings ratio. Walker is hitting .289 with a team-high 16 doubles, which ranks third all-time by an OU freshman. He has added 31 runs, 30 RBI and three home runs.

A trio of Oklahoma juniors round out the Sooners’ Honorable Mention selections. Infielder Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) has made multiple starts at all four infield positions and is a .278 hitter with a .401 OBP, 32 runs and four home runs. Right-handed relief pitcher JB Olson is 1-1 on the mound with four save and 41 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched. Outfielder and designated hitter Cody Thomas, a former OU quarterback, hit .425 in league play to lift his overall average to .288. Overall, he is slugging .519 with six home runs and 22 RBI.

Oklahoma opens the Big 12 Championship as the five seed and takes on fourth-seeded West Virginia on Wednesday morning from Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City at 9:00 am.
