Willis Washington is alive because 19 Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) blood donors gave him the gift of life. A tragic motorcycle accident left him a paraplegic.

As he says, “What if only 15 people had given blood that day? I wouldn’t be here!”

Oklahoma Blood Institute is urging all people age 16 or older to boost community blood supplies for the Memorial Day holiday weekend Thursday and Friday, May 26 and 27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Pulled-pork sandwiches, courtesy of Oklahoma Pork Council and Oklahoma-proud T-shirts will be given to donors at all OBI donor centers.

In addition, each donor will receive a voucher for two admissions to the Oklahoma City Zoo, health screenings and Donor Rewards points. One lucky Oklahoma donor will win a barbecue pork picnic for 40, compliments of the Pork Council. This marks the tenth year the council has supported this event.

Donors at metro-OKC centers also have a chance to win one of these prizes: a three-night stay in Dallas Ramada Inn Park Central with admission for two at Six Flag, Hurricane Harbor and the Sixth Floor Museum, two tickets to the James Taylor concert in Tulsa, or $100 Blu’s and Burgers restaurant gift cards.

“We urgently need people to give now! The lives of people needing blood in our hospitals could easily be in jeopardy without help before this holiday,” said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO.  “We are truly grateful for those who take the time before the holiday to give an hour to help others in our area.”

Since there is no substitute for human blood, and supplies must be constantly renewed, the need for donation is great. Blood donation generally takes only about one hour and can be done as often as every 56 days. Each blood donor can save the lives of up to three Oklahomans.
