OKCPS Ending School Year Two Days Early

Oklahoma City Public Schools continue to slash their budget and will now cut school days too.

A Special Meeting of the Board of Education started at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The Board voted and approved to end the school year two days earlier. The last day of school was set for May 27. Now it will be on May 25.

Officials told News 9 this decision could help the district save at least $4,000, up to $20,000 per day.

This was part of a recommendation made by Associate Superintendent Aurora Lora. It would help Oklahoma City Public Schools save money, and allow for additional professional development for staff. Staff would still report to work if classes end early.

On Monday night Lora recommended another $7-million in budget cuts to the Board of Education. If those are approved it would bring the total amount of reductions to $30 million in staffing, services and support.

Several metro districts have made similar moves to save money, including Yukon and Edmond public.

Wednesday morning's meeting started at 8 a.m. at the Faculty House on N.E. 14th street.
