Interstate 35 Expansion Project In Norman Is Halfway Complete

A $71 million highway project — which until recently was the largest in Oklahoma history — is about halfway complete. 

The project widens Interstate 35 around Norman from four to six lanes. 

It also replaces the State Highway 9 East and Lindsey Street interchanges. 

The State Highway 9 East bridge is actually already finished, and is being used as a detour for traffic that normally takes Lindsey Street. 

Doug Kennon owns Sooner Legends Inn and Suites on Lindsey Street. 

No other business is being infringed on more than his by the construction. 

However, he said he’s dealing with it the best he can.

“You’ve got to take a step back in life sometimes. We’ve known this was coming for a long time. It’s painful in the short term, but it will be beautiful in the end,” he said.  

ODOT spokesman Cody Boyd said the project will be complete in early 2017.
