Spring and Summer mean its festival time in Oklahoma. Some of those festivals take you back to medieval times.

You’ve probably seen festival goers dressed in armor from the 17th century. Chances are they are part the Society or Creative Anachronism or SCA.

It got its started start in the 1960’s in California when some history buffs and roll playing enthusiasts drew swords and waged war.

“It’s a fun way to bond with our friends,” said Kylie Steeley, whose parents were SCA members.

“For almost 33 year this has been who I am,” added Steeley.

The Norman resident will often invites friends and other SCA members to practice their medieval crafts on her property.

There’s archery, sword fighting, and arts and crafts popular 400 to 500 years ago in Europe.

“It teaches you honor and chivalry,” said Steeley about her weekend lifestyle.

SCA members will test their skills at national tournaments. Thanks in part to TV shows and movies, SCA membership around the world has gone up.

But don’t assume all SCA members are huge Game of Thrones fans. Steeley admits she hasn’t seen the last season.

Find an SCA group where you live.
