A local cancer patient is suing health insurance giant Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma.

At issue is the company’s denial of a cancer-fighting treatment.

Randy Farland was diagnosed with prostate cancer on his 59 birthday on April 21, 2015.

ProCure Radiation Oncologist Les Yonemoto recommended proton radiation therapy.

However, Dr. Yonemoto said Farland’s insurance provider Blue Cross and Blue Shield announced they were discontinuing Proton Therapy coverage just six days before Farland was diagnosed.

Farland and ProCure and Proton Therapy are now both suing Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

“I’ve been using proton therapy for prostate cancer over 22 years,” Yonemoto said Monday. “It’s been proven beyond scientific need being.”

A Blue Cross and Blue Shield spokesperson told News 9 Monday they hadn’t been served legal papers yet.

They also said privacy laws forbid them from discussing a patient’s situation, without that patient’s written approval.
