Oklahoma State made history Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field as the 18th-ranked Cowboys completed a series sweep of Texas with an 8-4 win.

With the victory, OSU improved to 28-15 overall and maintained second place in the Big 12 Conference standings with a 12-6 league mark.

The Cowboys also accomplished something no other OSU ballclub ever has as the series sweep was the Pokes third on the road in Big 12 play this season. OSU, which also picked up series sweeps at Kansas State and at Baylor, had never previously recorded three road series sweeps in the Big 12 era.

Adding to the accomplishment, the performance at Texas marks only the second time OSU has swept a three-game series in Austin, with the other coming in 2008.

“That was exceptional,” said OSU head coach Josh Holliday after his Cowboys swept UT for the second-straight year. “The kids did a great job all three games. To play three games stuffed into a window of maybe 36 hours at the most was great effort, toughness – all the things you want to see in a group of kids, they showed us. I’m very proud of them.”

OSU led for much of Sunday’s contest but needed a late rally to emerge victorious after Texas (20-24, 9-9) battled back to tie the score.

The game entered the eighth tied 4-4, but the Cowboys used a single, walk and hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. Jon Littell then stepped to the plate and worked a full count before drawing a walk to bring home the go-ahead run.

After a strikeout, J.R. Davis was hit by a pitch to collect an RBI and make it 6-4 before Corey Hassel followed with a two-RBI single to right field to push the OSU lead to four.

Michael Mertz and Tyler Buffett would slam the door on any hopes of a UT comeback attempt, with Mertz picking up two strikeouts in a scoreless eighth before Buffett struck out a pair in a perfect ninth to seal the win.

Offensively, the Cowboys were led by Hassel’s 3-for-5, two-RBI day, while Donnie Walton was 2-for-5 and drove in a OSU’s first run with an single in the third inning that extended his career-long hitting streak to 16 games.

Also providing a clutch hit for the Pokes was designated hitter Colin Simpson, who launched a two-RBI double to deep center field to highlight a three-run sixth inning.

Earning the win on the mound was Alex Hackerott, who entered the 4-4 game with two outs in the seventh and Longhorns on the corners and got Patrick Mathis to groundout to end the inning. The win was the southpaw’s first of the season as he moved to 1-0.

OSU returns to action Friday night when they open a three-game series against Prairie View A&M at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
