Ted Cruz Chooses Carly Fiorina As Running Mate In Presidential Campaign

Ted Cruz has chosen Carly Fiorina to be his running mate in the 2016 presidential campaign, two sources with knowledge of the deliberations confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday.

The Texas senator is expected to make the announcement at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, will do media interviews after the announcement.

In the morning, Cruz teased the news, saying he had a "major announcement" to make later in the day. This comes just two days after a source close to Fiorina confirmed to CBS that Cruz was vetting her as a vice presidential candidate.

Speaking to reporters Monday afternoon, Cruz wouldn't openly acknowledge Fiorina was being vetted.

"We have acknowledged some time ago that we have begun a vice presidential search process. Any responsible candidate just a couple of months out from the convention would begin that process," he said. "We've begun examining both a long list and now a shorter list that has been called. And that naturally includes a vetting process. At this point, no decisions have been made in terms of who a nominee would be. Or what the timing would be of the announcement."

Fiorina endorsed Cruz last month. Cruz has decided to team up with John Kasich to try and block Donald Trump from receiving the GOP nomination.

But the announcement comes a day after Donald Trump expanded his primary lead in the path to the nomination, sweeping all five states that held primaries on Tuesday. According to CBS News' latest count, Trump has 949 delegates, Cruz has 556 and Kasich has 152. A candidate needs 1,237 in order to win the GOP nomination.

Fiorina will be the keynote speaker at the Oklahoma Republican Party’s annual Gala dinner on May 13, 2016. The event precedes the Party’s state convention which will be held the next day.

The Oklahoma Republican Party’s annual Gala Dinner will be held at the Skirvin Hilton in Downtown Oklahoma City, 1 Park Avenue. A reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a dinner beginning at 7 p.m. Fiorina will be attending the reception and will be the keynote speaker at the dinner.
