OU Student Government Fails To Pass Resolution Due To Use Of 'Boomer Sooner'

Fellow students and an OU legend reacted to a controversial vote taken Tuesday by the university’s student governing board. 

The school’s Undergraduate Student Congress voted on a resolution designed to congratulate OU’s outstanding sports teams for their terrific seasons. 

The measure failed because it would have included the phrase “Boomer Sooner.” 

A student organization calling itself Indigenize OU told OU’s student newspaper it was the right thing to do.

“Because the terms Boomer and Sooner are tied to colonization and land theft in this state,” part of their statement read.

Neither Indigenize OU nor OU’s Undergraduate Student Congress responded to our calls or emails Wednesday afternoon. 

However other students News 9 talked to on campus were happy to discuss it, including OU senior Jessi Stringer.

“I get it, I really am happy they are sparking conversation, but I think it is irrational to remove 'Boomer Sooner.' It’s a modernized phrase. It’s 2016, and that’s our battle cry. That’s what we use to celebrate anything,” she said. 

Former OU football coach Barry Switzer was on a fishing trip Wednesday, but told News 9, “I don’t see it. It just amazes me what these students come up with.”
