Emergency crews responded to a crude oil leak at an oilfield site in southeast Oklahoma City, Thursday morning.

According to the Oklahoma City Fire Department, it happened at an oilfield site at 5041 S. Byers Ave. Crews estimate that 1200 gallons of the oil/water mixture leaked prior to their arrival.  The majority of the product was contained in a concrete dam that was built around the tank batteries just in case a leak like this occurred. However, an estimated 500 gallons, officials said, spilled over the concrete dam and onto S.E. 50th St. just west of Byers.

Some of the crude made its way down the hill on S.E. 50th St. to a creek near Stiles Ave.  Firefighters quickly built a dirt dam around the pooled crude on 50th St. while simultaneously containing what little product was in the creek.

Firefighters contained the product quickly so that it did not involve a larger area.  The Corporation Commission and Storm Water Quality were called to the scene to assist and investigate.  A transport tank truck was also called to the scene to collect the crude which was contained in the concrete dam around the tanks.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of S.E. 50th St. between Stiles Ave. and S. Byers Ave. were shut down as crews worked to clear the scene.
