Boston Beatdown: Thunder Blast Celtics For Its Second Straight Blowout Win

It isn’t every game that both Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are firmly seated on the bench throughout the final quarter, but OKC’s superstars had the luxury of picking up some much needed rest as the Thunder handily beat the Celtics 130-109 on Wednesday night in Boston.

Tonight’s impressive win marked two consecutive Thunder blowouts after the Thunder pummeled the Trailblazers by 34 points on Monday.

“Defensively we’re playing the right way and helping each other,” Durant said about the team’s recent success. “We’ve got to stay in this groove that we have defensively, and offensively the first and second units are doing a great job of moving the ball and finding each other and making the game simple. We’ve just got to ride this wave right now and see where it takes us and continue to keep growing.”

With the Thunder pulling away in the third quarter, Westbrook led a ferocious sequence that sent some fans scurrying for the exits a bit earlier than expected.

After grabbing the rebound off the Boston miss, OKC’s dynamic point guard swished a 3-pointer at the top of the key to put the Thunder up 22 points, but the relentless attack wasn’t over just yet. Enes Kanter put-back a Serge Ibaka miss shot on the next OKC possession, and then fresh off a Celtics’ timeout, Westbrook connected from behind the arc yet again to put the Thunder up 27.

Not only were the Thunder running away, but Westbrook made sure everyone knew about it as stuck up three fingers as he ran back down the court, and quickly circled his arm around multiple times in a windmill motion while flashing his signature smirk.

Westbrook finished the night with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Durant had a very complete game with a team-high 28 points to go with his nine assists and seven rebounds.

“Those guys really played great and it was good to see them in timeouts,” Thunder head coach Billy Donovan said. “We got up there, and they made a run back at us, and then we kind of stopped it and were able to build on it.”

OKC’s superstars brought their “A Game” as usual, but so did their Turkish comrade. Kanter continued his recent stellar play and finished the game with 17 points and 12 rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

“He’s working harder defensively, I think he’s made some growth and some strides and obviously offensively when he’s on the floor for extended minutes, with the way he offensive rebounds and things that he does, he’s going to score,” Donovan said about Kanter. “He’s given us three games right in a row that’ve been really good.”

While the Thunder won with ease, there were some moments throughout the game where the Celtics tried to make things interesting. Boston’s Isaiah Thomas showcased why he was named an all-star for the first time this season, as the point guard totaled 29 points in the loss.

“He played as hard as he could tonight and I think we did a good job of making all his shots tough, but great players make shots, and he’s one of them,” Durant said of Thomas’ performance.

Along with Kanter, Randy Foye also played well off the OKC bench with 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Dion Waiters was back with the Thunder after missing some time due to the passing of his brother, and scored five points while logging 11 minutes of playing time.

The Thunder will look to continue its winning ways on Friday night when they take on the 76ers in Philadelphia at 6 p.m.
