What do you do with a teenager who continuously gets in trouble at school?

About the only options for the schools these days are to suspend them or expel them.

That often only exacerbates the problem putting the student further behind academically.

A state legislator, Sen. Ron Sharp who was a teacher himself for 38 years, wants to give schools and parents another option. It has passed the Senate, and I'm curious to see what you think about it.

His idea is to give local school boards the option of imposing community service on misbehaving students, but that's not all.

He thinks it would work best if parents performed the community service with their kids.

If the kid is a bully, you could have him or her work with students and adults with special needs, that might open their eyes.

If they're repeatedly tardy or absent, require them to work the morning shift at a homeless shelter, clean up graffiti, help take care of parks. Things like that.

I like this idea. It's another tool schools could use to rein in increasingly unruly students, and I like that it leaves it up to the local school boards to decide what will work with their students in their unique communities.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
