Just one day after winning his second consecutive Big 12 Player of the Year award, Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield was named Sporting News’  top player in college basketball. Hield is OU’s third player of the year honoree by Sporting News, joining Stacey King (1988-89) and Blake Griffin (2008-09).

Additionally, the Bahamas native was named Big 12 Player of the Year by the AP and First Team All-American by USA Today.

Hield is the AP’s Big 12 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was a unanimous pick this time, getting all 20 votes cast. He is the first player in the conference’s 20 seasons to twice win AP’s top Big 12 player award. Hield was also named to the AP’s All-Big 12 First Team.

Joining Hield on USA Today’s All-America First Team were Brice Johnson (North Carolina), Jakob Poeltl (Utah), Tyler Ulis (Kentucky) and Denzel Valentine (Michigan State).

The 6-4, 214-pound Hield ranks first among Power 5 players with his 25.1 points and 4.1 3-pointers per game. He leads Big 12 guards with his 5.5 rebounds per contest.  In 18 Big 12 conference games this season, Hield averaged 4.4 treys per outing.

Hield has registered nine games of at least 30 points this season, which is the same total as the rest of the Big 12 combined. Through 30 regular season contests, he has 15 games of at least 25 points and 22 outings of at least 20.

Hield’s 79 3-pointers in conference play this season marked the most ever in Big 12 history. His 124 regular season treys are also a Big 12 record (and are the most in college basketball this season). His 448 combined points in conference play were the third-most in Big 12 history, behind only Kevin Durant of Texas (462, 2006-07) and Michael Beasley of Kansas State (455, 2007-08). Hield’s 24.9 points per game in conference games marked the third-highest average ever in a Big 12 campaign (Durant-28.9 and Beasley-28.4).

The Bahamas native currently ranks fourth all-time at OU and fifth all-time in Big 12 history in career scoring with 2,210 points. Hield finished with 1,202 points in conference play over the past four seasons, the most by any player in Big 12 history.

Hield and the Sooners finished 24-6 on the season and in third place in the Big 12 with a 12-6 record. As the third seed in the upcoming Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, OU will take on sixth-seeded Iowa State in a Thursday quarterfinals game at 8 p.m. CT inside Kansas City's Sprint Center (televised by ESPNU).
