For the first time, we're hearing from a man who saw Aubrey McClendon moments before the accident.

The driver said everything happened within a matter of seconds. But when news of Aubrey McClendon's death broke Wednesday afternoon, he instantly realized what he'd witnessed.

Greg Griggs said he could hear the SUV coming before he ever saw it pass through the intersection.

“A loud roar coming down the hill. Sounded like an engine or tires roaring,” said Griggs.

Griggs said he was stopped at the intersection of NE 122nd and Midwest Boulevard waiting to turn left when he saw a black SUV speed through the intersection.

“He zoomed through. I mean zoomed. I'm talking about gettin' it,” said Griggs.

Griggs eventually made the left turn onto Midwest Boulevard.

“I turned and went this way and I got to the top of that hill right there where that sign is, that's where I seen it,” he said. “It was an instant explosion I mean it was a fire ball.”

News 9 was told it will be at least a week before investigators can determine the exact cause of the crash. Police said right now it's too soon to call the crash intentional.

But now those who worked with McClendon and those who loved him have created a roadside memorial at the crash site to remember the legacy McClendon leaves behind.

A public service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 7 for McClendon at Crossings Community Church.
