Steve Spurrier Jr., the wide receivers coach on the University of Oklahoma’s 2000 national champion football team and an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina for more than a decade, has returned to OU as the program’s director of high school recruiting and as an offensive specialist, head coach Bob Stoops announced Thursday.

"It’s great to have Steve back with us," said Stoops. "He was a big part of our original staff here, was with us for three years and helped us win a national championship. He’s a very positive guy and I have great respect for the way he works and the way he relates with recruits. He’ll play a strong role in on-campus recruiting and will also serve in an offensive specialist role."

Spurrier Jr. served the last 11 seasons at South Carolina as the Gamecocks’ wide receivers coach. He added titles of passing game coordinator in 2009, recruiting coordinator in 2011 and co-offensive coordinator in 2012. He helped USC to nine bowl games. Among his pupils were future NFL standouts Sidney Rice and Alshon Jeffery.

Spurrier Jr. spent the 2004 season as an assistant under Mike Stoops at the University of Arizona after serving the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the wide receivers coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.

At Oklahoma from 1999 through 2001, Spurrier Jr. tutored All-Big 12 receivers Mark Clayton, Curtis Fagan, Jarrail Jackson, Josh Norman, Antwone Savage and Andre Woolfolk.

Prior to arriving in Norman, Spurrier Jr. worked at the University of Florida for five seasons and was on the staff of the Gators’ 1996 national championship squad as a graduate assistant.

During his collegiate coaching career, he has been a part of 14 postseason bowl teams, four conference championships (three SEC and one Big 12) and two national championships.

Spurrier Jr. played football at Duke, where he earned his degree in 1994. He earned a master’s degree at Florida in 1996.

He and his wife Melissa are the parents of seven children.
