Bob Stoops was in a relaxed mood when we interviewed the OU coach last week for a piece for Sunday night’s Blitz. The entire interview is attached as only about half of our visit was included in last night’s show.

With signing day out of the way, Stoops was able to discuss his quarterbacks, including 5-star Texas A&M transfer Kyler Murray. We discussed the new defensive line coach hire and what needs to be done with his defensive front moving forward after Clemson’s success going north and south in the National Semifinal. Stoops was not ready to place all the bowl game issues on his down lineman, saying backers, ends and safeties were at times out of place and also didn’t tackle well. Stoops singled out young players in the system that he believes are big enough and talented enough to join a group of inside linemen who had a great deal of success for the most part of 2015.

Stoops discussed how his veteran stars can be expected to improve as they’ve only had one year in the new system of OU OC Lincoln Riley. I asked him to name a handful of players on both sides of the ball who could go from relative obscurity to household names. Interesting answers, including one veteran we don’t know much about and several young pups. And of course we sneaked a little golf talk in. Specifically, his stiffing a 6-iron on No. 17 in the ATT Pebble Beach Pro-Am that led to birdie as he partnered with Rhein Gibson (Aussie out of Oklahoma Christian, who made the cut but finished 68th), of whom Stoops spoke fondly.

Thanks for checking in. Enjoy!
