NASA needs 14 new astronauts, and a record-breaking 18,000 people have applied. But what does it take to be an astronaut?

The total amount of people applied for those openings --18,300. So if you've ever wondered what it takes to possibly explore the unknown, here you go.

This is from CNet.com. You must learn Russian. The International Space Station is, well, international, so you'll have to communicate with others, especially Russians.

Also, you must have good vision. Candidates' vision must be 20/20, or at least 20/100 in each eye, and then corrected with surgery.

Here's a big one. Astronaut candidates must be able to swim 75 meters without stopping. They also have to swim 75 more meters in a flight suit and tennis shoes, and also be able to tread water for 10 minutes in a flight suit. 

There are also some general requirements. You need at least a bachelor's degree in science, math or engineering, You have to be a U.S. citizen. And as far as height, you have to be between 4’8” and 6’3”.

As for the pay of an astronaut it ranges $66,000 to $144,000.
