Former Bait Dog With Deformed Paw Gets Prosthesis

Posted: Updated:
MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma -

A metro business showed more kindness to a dog Monday than she has received her whole life.

Rescuers at the Midwest City Animal Shelter found the dog on the streets and realized she was probably a bait dog.

She was also born with a deformed paw.

On Monday, the 5-year-old dog named Lovely received a prosthetic leg for free from Celerity Prosthetics.

Lovely’s scars tell a painful past.

She is covered in bite marks, her ear is split in two and someone grinded her teeth down so she could not defend herself.

Those are all signs she was used as a bait dog for other dogs to attack.

“We thought immediately that's the perfect underdog, she is the epitome of an underdog,” said Meike Parker with The Underdogs Rescue.

The Underdogs Rescue got Lovely from MWC and reached out to Celerity Prosthetics.

Andy Anders said he would help, however, it is the first animal prosthesis he has ever done.

“What do you do for a dog, there is nothing for a dog, so, right now it's, pretty much for me, just all  trial and error,” said Andy Anders of Celerity Prosthetics in Oklahoma City.

Anders came up with his own design, made a cast of Lovely's leg and fitted her with the finished product.

“To look at her and see how friendly she is and how much she still loves people and trusts people, I think that's something that everybody can learn from,” Parker said.

The Underdogs Rescue is currently fostering two other dogs with deformed paws, Hattie Mae and Roo.

Anders is going to try to help them, too, all for free.

“I mean I like working with people because that's my thing, but if I could somehow bring animals into the mix, it would be even better,” Anders told News 9.

Adoptions from The Underdogs Rescue are $125 and include all age-appropriate shots, spay-neuter surgery and tags.
