Okmulgee County Emergency Management Director Tim Creighton said Monday that the Nuyaka fire is only about 60 percent contained, but they feel like the area is in good shape.

The Forestry Service did a great job Sunday getting the fire contained, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs will be in Okmulgee County again Monday working on hot spots, he said.

Fires in Okmulgee County have been burning for several days. They've burned over 20,000 acres and destroyed or damaged around 15 homes and buildings.

Creighton said Okmulgee County firefighters deserve a lot of credit in battling the wildfires. If crews haven't been in Nuyaka, they've been fighting fires elsewhere in the county, he said.
