Oklahoma State’s Donnie Walton has been named to the 2016 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, it was announced today by USA Baseball.

Walton, a senior infielder for the Cowboys, is one of 50 players on the watch list. The Golden Spikes Award is presented annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Entering his final collegiate season, Walton has played in 160 career games and owns a .306 batting average to go along with eight home runs, 92 RBIs, 30 doubles and an OSU-record 52 sacrifice bunts.

Walton was an All-Big 12 Conference First Team selection in 2014 and 2015 and returned to OSU for his final season despite being a 23rd-round draft pick of Milwaukee in last June’s Major League Baseball Draft.

After hitting .326 with four homers and 29 RBIs in 39 games for the Cowboys last season, Walton starred in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League over the summer. He was named the CCBL All-Star Game MVP and then earned the Star of Stars Award as the most valuable player of CCBL playoffs after leading the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to the league championship.

The Golden Spikes Award debuted in 1978, and Oklahoma State has had one previous winner, Robin Ventura in 1988.
